PetO Expands Nationwide

Sydney, May 28: PetO, Australia’s largest independently owned pet specialty store, has announced a significant expansion with the acquisition of 41 new retail stores and 25 vet clinics.
This strategic move positions the Sydney-based family business as a major player in the pet specialty market, joining the ranks of Petbarn and Petstock.
The expansion sees PetO absorbing renowned brands such as Best Friends, Our Vet, My Pet Warehouse, and Pet City.
This acquisition follows a court-enforced divesture notice from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to Petstock and Woolworths, addressing anti-competitive behavior in the market.
Co-founder Nick Greenhalgh expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion, highlighting the timing as ideal given Australia’s record levels of pet ownership and increasing demand for pet products.
“We couldn’t think of a more exciting time to be expanding across the country,” Greenhalgh said.
PetO will grow from 17 stores in New South Wales to 58 retail locations nationwide, including new markets in Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania.
The company expects its revenue to triple as a result of the expansion, reaching approximately $200 million in the next financial year.
Founded in 2006 by brothers Nick Greenhalgh and David Rowe, PetO has established a reputation for quality customer service and extensive product offerings in the Sydney region.
The company’s commitment to customer experience and expert advice has been a cornerstone of its success. “We know your furry friend is more than just a pet, they’re a member of your family,” Greenhalgh added.
The expansion will see PetO’s team grow tenfold to 1,000 staff members.
Existing staff from the acquired stores will be retained, and additional positions will be created within a new support team.
During the transitional period, PetO will continue to operate the acquired businesses under their existing brands.
“We respect these brands, they have worked hard to develop strong recognition and their people are experts in their field,” added Greenhalgh.
In addition to retail stores, PetO will also absorb 25 vet clinics under the Our Vet brand, continuing to offer specialized in-house services and products to pet owners in Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales.
“This is an exciting new beginning for the Our Vet clinics, and we are thrilled to be continuing to offer our services to our loyal and dedicated customers,” concluded Greenhalgh.
PetO’s nationwide expansion marks a new chapter in the company’s history, bringing its passion for pets to a broader audience and strengthening its position in the Australian pet specialty market.
