Marseille, May 9: The Olympic Torch Relay began its journey through France with a grand celebration in Marseille, marking a key moment on the road to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The historic maritime city welcomed the Olympic Flame with open arms after its 12-day voyage across the Mediterranean on the three-masted ship, Belem.
Florent Manaudou, Nantenin Keita, and JuL, three emblematic figures from France, were the first to carry the torch on French soil, symbolizing unity and the spirit of the Games.
“I wanted the Flame to be welcomed to Marseille by emblematic personalities who embody what we are going to honor and celebrate through the Relay: Florent Manaudou, an iconic athlete of his generation; the first Relay in France to be handed over to Paralympic athlete Nantenin Keita, to symbolize our ambition to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games closer together; and JuL, an emblematic figure from Marseille, a popular artist who has racked up a string of records and embodies the festive spirit of the Relay,” said Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024.
The arrival was celebrated by over 150,000 attendees and an armada of 1,024 local boats. Festivities included performances by the Marseille ballet, La Horde, and street comedian Lison Daniel, culminating in a pyrotechnic drone show depicting the Olympic rings.
Following the cauldron lighting, local artists Soprano and Alonzo performed a free concert, rounding off a day packed with highlights.
The Flame will continue its 69-day journey across France, engaging communities and igniting excitement for the upcoming Games.
