Paris, April 24: The Paris 2024 Olympic Torch Relay is set to illuminate over 30 UNESCO World Heritage sites, culminating in a historic opening ceremony on the Banks of the Seine in Paris on July 26, a first in modern Olympic history.
Starting on April 16, the Olympic flame will be lit at the Archaeological Site of Olympia in Greece, a UNESCO site since 1989. After reaching Marseille on May 8, the relay will embark on a tour through France, celebrating both the Olympic spirit and the nation’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
Key highlights of the relay include the Roman and Romanesque monuments in Arles, the well-preserved medieval fortifications of Carcassonne, and St. Marie Cathedral in Auch, which forms part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France. The flame will also traverse the dramatic mountain landscapes of the Pyrenees at Gavarnie Cirque and visit the iconic Mont-Saint-Michel and its Bay.
Other significant stops feature the Roman Theatre in Orange, known for its grandeur, and the eclectic urban and architectural styles of Nice. The relay will not miss the Champagne Hillsides, renowned for their vineyards and historic cellars crucial to the production of sparkling wine.
Cultural and architectural diversity will be showcased at various other sites, including the 13th-century Amiens Cathedral, the city of Le Havre, rebuilt by Auguste Perret following World War II, and the storied Chartres Cathedral, celebrated for its stained-glass windows and Gothic architecture.
The journey through France’s heritage will build to a climax as the torch reaches the heart of Paris, setting the stage for an Olympic opening ceremony that promises to be as memorable as the sites it honors.
