Sydney, April 10: Rakuten Kobo, a global leader in digital reading, today announced the launch of its first-ever colour E Ink eReaders, the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour.
This innovative step introduces book enthusiasts to a vibrant digital reading experience beyond the traditional black and white, maintaining the beloved benefits of E Ink technology.
Equipped with the Kobo-optimized colour E Ink Kaleido™ 3 display, these new devices offer readers a rich yet subtle colour palette, combining the best of print and digital reading.
With features like extensive storage capacity for thousands of books, long-lasting battery life, around-the-clock access to the Kobo.com bookstore, and OverDrive integration for easy library book borrowing, these eReaders are designed to enhance the digital library experience.
Additionally, Bluetooth® wireless technology integration allows for effortless listening to Kobo Audiobooks.

Michael Tamblyn, CEO of Rakuten Kobo, expressed enthusiasm for the launch, emphasizing the company’s role as a pioneer in offering affordable colour eReaders.
“Introducing colour to our eReaders enriches the reading experience while maintaining the daylight readability and battery longevity E Ink screens are known for,” Tamblyn stated.
The Kobo Libra Colour also introduces stylus compatibility, making it Kobo’s most affordable eReader to support the Kobo Stylus 2 (sold separately) for colour handwriting, highlighting, and notebook features. This capability extends the device’s utility to journaling, note-taking, and ebook annotations in a popular 7” format.
The Kobo Clara Colour further enhances reading with colour highlighting options.
Ramesh Mantha, SVP of Product at Rakuten Kobo, highlighted the technical advancements made to optimize the Kaleido 3 display for the best colour representation, including collimated front lighting technology and software engineering for colour regulation.
Complementing the new colour eReaders, Kobo continues its commitment to sustainability by incorporating repairability features and using recycled and ocean-bound plastics in its devices. The new Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour, along with the Kobo Clara BW—a new black-and-white model—are designed with eco-conscious materials, including their vibrant SleepCovers made from fully recycled materials.
The Kobo Libra Colour is priced at AU$359.95, the Kobo Clara Colour at AU$259.95, and the Kobo Clara BW at $239.95 AUD.
Pre-orders start April 10, with availability in stores and online from April 30 across various countries including Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia.
This launch not only signifies Rakuten Kobo’s innovation in digital reading technology but also its dedication to environmental sustainability and a superior user experience.
Whether it’s reading by the beach or late into the night with reduced blue light exposure, these eReaders are crafted for every book lover’s need.
