Kobo’s Reading Revolution

By June Ramli

Sydney, March 13: In an exclusive interview with DailyStraits.com in Sydney last month, CEO Michael Tamblyn shared insights into how Kobo has emerged as a leader in the e-reader market, consistently introducing groundbreaking technological innovations.
The company’s firsts, such as the mass-market waterproof e-readers and premium, large-screen devices with stylus support, underscore Kobo’s commitment to elevating the digital reading experience. “This is the whole business for us,” Tamblyn said, highlighting Kobo’s singular focus on e-reading, in contrast to competitors’ broader market strategies that include cross-selling unrelated products or advertising.
Tamblyn emphasized Kobo’s dedication to a customer-first approach, with many of the company’s innovations originating from direct customer feedback.
For instance, the initiative to waterproof devices was born from the discovery that a significant number of Kobo users were apprehensive about using their e-readers near water.

This led to the pioneering of waterproof e-readers, thereby making new reading environments accessible.
Likewise, the development of premium e-readers featuring high-definition screens and larger displays was in response to a demand for a superior reading experience, paralleling investments by those who pursue high-quality experiences in other hobbies, such as top-tier home entertainment systems or audiophile-level headphones.
In the discussion about Kobo’s diverse product range, which includes compact six-inch models for portability and ten-inch devices for interactive reading and note-taking, Tamblyn noted that the variety caters not only to different price points but also to individual preferences for incorporating reading into their lifestyle.
Furthermore, Tamblyn spoke on the advancements in screen technology, which have significantly improved readability and comfort for users. Modern Kobo devices boast high-resolution displays that closely mimic the print quality of paper books.

These improvements are augmented by ComfortLight, Kobo’s variable color temperature front light, which adjusts the screen’s color temperature throughout the day to reduce blue light exposure in the evening, aiding in sleep.
As Kobo continues to expand its global reach, Tamblyn expressed satisfaction with the company’s strategic partnerships and its commitment to serving diverse reader demographics, including children, academics, and non-English speakers.
Kobo’s partnerships with major retail and library networks worldwide demonstrate its commitment to making digital reading widely accessible.
Under Tamblyn’s leadership, Kobo remains focused on pushing the boundaries of e-reading technology and expanding its market presence, all while prioritizing the reading experience for its users.
