Darwin, Jan 17: Qantas, Australia’s national carrier, has recently unveiled exciting news for travelers as it launches a new international route connecting Darwin in the Northern Territory to Singapore. Commencing operations in December, this new route will significantly enhance travel options for both locals and visitors, offering more than 60,000 seats annually.
The direct flights between Darwin and Singapore will provide travelers with a convenient gateway to experience some of the iconic attractions and experiences in the Top End of Australia. Additionally, these flights will allow Territorians to access Singapore directly and establish a seamless connection to London on QF1, as well as other European and Asian destinations through Qantas’ partner airlines. This means passengers traveling from Darwin to London will save approximately five hours in flying time by bypassing other Australian capital cities.
Starting from December 9, 2024, these flights will initially operate five days a week, utilizing the dual-class Embraer E190 aircraft. The frequency will increase to daily flights starting in March 2025. This expansion is made possible by the establishment of the E190 base at Darwin Airport, with the aircraft’s size, range, and economic viability making it suitable for routes that may not be feasible with larger aircraft.
Cam Wallace, Qantas International CEO, expressed his enthusiasm for this new addition to the airline’s international network, saying, “We’re thrilled to be offering our customers another new international route out of Darwin and strengthening the important trade, business, and tourism links between Australia and Singapore. This new route also allows us to restore the link to the UK, making it much easier for Qantas customers from the UK, Europe, and across Asia to incorporate Darwin into their Australian itinerary and experience everything the Territory has to offer.”
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Joel Bowden also praised the announcement, highlighting its significance for Darwin’s aviation capacity and the benefits it brings to both locals and business travelers. He commended Qantas for reinforcing the Northern Territory’s appeal as a must-visit destination for international travelers.
Notably, Qantas has a rich history of flying between Darwin and Singapore, with Darwin serving as the final Australian stopover on the original Kangaroo Route from Australia to London in 1935. In contrast to the lengthy journey of those days, the new direct service to Singapore will take just four hours and 45 minutes.
Fares for this exciting new route start from $690 for a return trip and are available for booking through the Qantas website or travel agents.
This expansion adds to the Qantas Group’s extensive network in the region, with 18 routes operating from Darwin, Alice Springs, and Uluru, and non-stop options connecting Darwin to eight domestic destinations.
With these new direct flights to Singapore, Qantas is opening up exciting travel possibilities, making the Top End of Australia more accessible than ever for both domestic and international travelers, and reinforcing its commitment to providing world-class service and connectivity to its customers.
