Sydney, Dec 18: In a proactive response to the anticipated surge in holiday travel, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has launched a robust national safety campaign to cover all nine designated airports (Canberra, Darwin, Cairns, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth), marking a significant step in ensuring a secure and orderly travel experience during the festive season.
This initiative, led by AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Morgan Blunden, involves deploying a force of 500 officers dedicated to maintaining security and order both in the air and on the ground.
The campaign focuses on addressing disruptive and offensive behaviour, which tends to escalate during this period of heightened travel activity.
Blunden emphasized the challenges that come with the increased passenger numbers expected during December and January.
Acknowledging that travelling during the Christmas period can be a stress-inducing experience, he underscored the necessity for patience and tolerance from travellers.
To assist in this endeavour, the AFP, in collaboration with airline and airport authorities, has rolled out a series of travel tips available on their website.
These tips aim to guide the public in ensuring a stress-free journey, with key advice on planning, timely arrivals, online check-ins, and moderate alcohol consumption.
The AFP’s campaign arrives at a time when the holiday season is expected to be the busiest in four years, with travel numbers reaching an estimated half of the Australian population moving through the country’s airports.
This remarkable increase in travel reflects a widespread eagerness to reunite with loved ones and enjoy a well-deserved break.
However, Blunden also pointed out the potential for challenges and frustrations during travel, stressing the importance of not allowing these to impact one’s behaviour negatively.
The AFP enforces a zero-tolerance policy towards disruptive and offensive behaviour in airports and on aircraft.
The repercussions of such behaviour are significant, including delays, bans, criminal charges, and potentially ruined holidays.
In addition to the AFP’s efforts, Australian Airports CEO James Goodwin expressed concern for the communities in Queensland affected by Cyclone Jasper.
He acknowledged the disruption caused by the cyclone and conveyed hope for a swift recovery and rebuilding process.
With this comprehensive safety campaign, the AFP aims to ensure that the holiday travel season proceeds smoothly and safely.
The emphasis is on mutual respect, patience, and understanding among travellers.
The AFP, along with airport and airline staff, are committed to facilitating a secure and pleasant travel environment, reminding everyone that cooperation and adherence to guidelines are crucial for a successful holiday season.
