Sabak Bernam, Dec 10: The grand finale of Karnival Ban Canal 2023 today marked a jubilant celebration of community spirit, cultural diversity, and a steadfast commitment to sustainable eco-tourism in Sabak Bernam.
Orchestrated by Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) (“MBI”) as an integral part of the Sabak Bernam Development Area (SABDA) initiative, this three-day extravaganza artfully showcased local identity, environmental stewardship, and a collective vision for a sustainable future.
With an impressive turnout of 10,000 attendees to date, the carnival successfully united both locals and visitors in an immersive experience amidst the natural splendour and cultural heritage of Sabak Bernam. The burgeoning promise of Ban Canal as a modern recreational and eco-tourism hub attests to the region’s unwavering dedication to preserving its historical and environmental treasures.
The heart of the carnival pulsated with diverse activities, not only spotlighting local talent and traditional skills but also nurturing a profound sense of unity and pride within the community. Highlights of the carnival, featuring 14 activities with participation from 1,200 individuals, included the Traditional Boat Race, Rekacipta Boat Inovasi, and Larian Bendang.

Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Menteri Besar of Selangor, emphasized, “The SABDA initiative goes beyond attracting substantial investments for economic growth. It delves into the essential activities and support required to rejuvenate the community’s livelihood and fortify existing projects through grants, technological infusion, and skills enhancement, among other avenues.”
Recognized as a pivotal economic zone under Rancangan Selangor Pertama (RS-1), the MBI-driven SABDA initiative strives to safeguard Selangor’s food security by endorsing agriculture projects in Sabak Bernam. It also aims to propel Selangor’s blue economy, focusing on advancing the region’s fishing industry, including downstream seafood production.
Simultaneously, SABDA is committed to promoting eco-tourism in aquaculture and agriculture with minimal environmental impact, expecting to attract RM 1.9 billion in investments and generate job opportunities for 3,600 individuals.
Datuk Rizam Ismail, SABDA Chairman and State executive councillor for rural development, declared that Karnival Ban Canal would be a prominent annual eco-tourism event in the SABDA calendar.
He expressed hope for its inclusion in the Visit Selangor Year 2025 campaign, anticipating broader participation and attendance from across Malaysia in future editions.
Meanwhile, Norita Mohd Sidek, MBI Chief Executive Officer, extended MBI’s commitment to infuse renewed vitality into Sabak Bernam, extending beyond the carnival through the promotion of eco-tourism.
Addressing financial and technological support for local businesses to enhance incomes, she affirmed, “Any grant will encompass skill development aspects to empower the local community. We aim to guide Sabak Bernam residents in adopting optimal methods for enhanced productivity in farming and fishing, ensuring the enduring sustainability of businesses and the community’s well-being.”
