Sydney, Dec 8: In a striking resurgence for Australia’s travel industry, international tourism has demonstrated a robust return to form, as indicated by the latest report from Tourism Research Australia (TRA).
The figures for September 2023 underscore a notable rebound, echoing pre-pandemic levels across crucial metrics.
Australia’s economic landscape witnessed a substantial revival, with international visitor spending surpassing pre-COVID benchmarks by an impressive 11 per cent, injecting a formidable $2.2 billion into the national economy.
September witnessed a surge in international trips to Australia, achieving 84 per cent of pre-COVID levels.
The corresponding nights spent in the country reached 18.3 million, marking a noteworthy recovery at 91 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, signalling a resurgence of interest in Australia as a premier international destination.
A diversity of travel motivations emerged in September 2023, with holiday travel leading the way. Impressively, this figure achieved 75 per cent of pre-COVID levels, coupled with a spend of $758 million, equating to 112 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
Other notable travel purposes, including visiting friends and relatives, business travel, and education-related trips, exhibited a robust resurgence in both trip volume and expenditure.
Australia’s top five international visitor markets in September 2023 shaped the travel narrative:
- New Zealand: Taking the lead, reaching 100 per cent of pre-COVID levels. Spend tallied an impressive $215 million, marking 147 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
- China: Contributing 60 per cent of pre-COVID levels. Despite a slight dip, spending maintained strength at $480 million, reflecting 94 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
- United States of America: Comprising 75 per cent of pre-COVID levels. The spending reached $163 million, a noteworthy 139 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
- United Kingdom: Accompanied by a spend of $163 million, surpassing pre-pandemic levels at 187 per cent.
- India: Securing 93 per cent of pre-COVID levels. Spend reached $77 million, maintaining a robust 93 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
International visitors made a considerable impact on Australia’s capital cities in September 2023, achieving 84 per cent of pre-COVID levels.
The accompanying spend amounted to $2.2 billion, a noteworthy 113 per cent of pre-pandemic levels. Regional areas experienced a substantial influx of visitors, constituting 73 per cent of pre-COVID levels. Regional spending reached $707 million, reflecting 96 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
Total spending for September 2023 exceeded expectations, reaching $3.4 billion, a remarkable 116 per cent of pre-COVID levels.
This comprehensive figure encompasses overseas purchases, including international connections, stopovers, and other pre- or post-travel expenditures outside Australia.
