Geneva, Dec 7: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts a robust recovery for the aviation sector, with an anticipated net profit of $25.7 billion in 2024.
Despite the positive outlook, challenges linger, including low net profit margins and ongoing industry vulnerabilities.
IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, acknowledges the industry’s resilience but emphasizes the need for cautious optimism. Key figures for 2024 include a net profit of $25.7 billion, operating profits of $49.3 billion, and historic high total revenues of $964 billion, driven by a 7.6 per cent year-over-year growth. Passenger travel is set to reach 4.7 billion, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, while cargo volumes are estimated at 61 million tonnes.
Recovery highlights the industry’s swift return to connectivity, but Walsh underlines challenges such as high infrastructure costs, regulatory complexities, and supply chain intricacies.
The report also points to potential risks, including economic developments, geopolitical tensions, and supply chain disruptions.
A recent public opinion poll reveals 97 per cent satisfaction among travellers, emphasizing the perception of air travel as a necessity for modern life.
As the industry aims for stability, the delicate balance between profit and sustainability becomes crucial.
In a parallel development, IATA reports a significant surge in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production. While SAF volumes doubled in 2023, accounting for 3 per cent of renewable fuel production, projections indicate a threefold increase in 2024.
Despite positive growth, challenges persist, with SAF constituting only 0.53 per cent of aviation’s fuel needs.
Walsh commends the growth but stresses the need for a more significant share of renewable fuel production to be allocated to SAF.
Government policies play a pivotal role in incentivizing increased SAF production and diversifying feedstocks.
A recent IATA survey underscores public support for SAF initiatives, with 86 per cent of travellers advocating for government incentives.
The aviation industry’s sustainability push gains momentum, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to accelerate progress and meet ambitious environmental targets.
