Melbourne, Nov 28: Dr Reuben Sim and Dr May Chan, once university sweethearts studying to become dentists, have not only transformed 30,000 smiles but have also been honoured with the prestigious Australian Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Meeting during their university years at the University of Adelaide, the couple embarked on a journey that began with humble beginnings and has now become a national success story.
After completing their studies, Dr. Reuben’s family invested their entire savings to support his dream of becoming a dentist, leading him to Australia with just $1000 in his bank account.
Despite tempting scholarships in other fields, Dr. Reuben followed his passion for dentistry.
Dr May Chan, inspired by a traumatic fall at the age of 9 that resulted in dental challenges, developed a strong ambition to pursue cosmetic dentistry.
Their paths converged during their second year at university, laying the foundation for a powerful partnership.
Together, driven by their shared passion for cosmetic dentistry and creating a judgment-free dental space, they founded Dental Boutique in 2013.
Starting in Balwyn, Melbourne, the couple distributed pamphlets tirelessly to promote their practice.
Their dedication paid off, leading to remarkable growth. Dental Boutique expanded to a 25-chair practice in 2018 and now operates clinics across Melbourne, Adelaide, Mornington, Sydney, Geelong, and Brisbane. Future clinics in Perth, Chatswood, Newcastle, and an international clinic in Auckland are in the works.
Dental Boutique, despite its substantial growth, maintains a people-centric approach, fostering a familial atmosphere among the staff.
The couple’s humility and values have earned them the nickname ‘Mum and Dad’ from some employees.
Transforming the smiles of 30,000 individuals this year alone, Dental Boutique remains focused on its core goal.
Dr. May Chan emphasizes, “We are not in the business of dentistry, but in the business of changing smiles and lives.”
Recently winning the Melbourne Young Entrepreneur Award for the third consecutive year, the couple expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Dental Boutique and elevate the dental industry.
