New research conducted by casino comparison site KingCasinoBonus.uk has shed light on the most commonly resold video game consoles.
Analyzing over 140,000 eBay listings across 119 different consoles, the study unveils the consoles that people are frequently selling. Retro systems dominate the list, with the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation securing the top positions.
The findings reveal the ten most commonly resold video game consoles globally:
- Nintendo Wii – 11,724 listings
- Xbox 360 – 5,059 listings
- PlayStation – 4,854 listings
- Nintendo DS Lite – 4,694 listings
- PlayStation 2 – 4,381 listings
- PlayStation 4 – 4,197 listings
- Nintendo 64 – 4,109 listings
- Nintendo Switch – 3,896 listings
- PlayStation 3 – 3,549 listings
- Xbox 360 S – 3,161 listings
Securing the top spot, the Nintendo Wii boasts a significant lead with 11,724 eBay listings, more than twice the number of its closest competitor. Originally released in 2006, this seventh-generation console played a crucial role in establishing Nintendo’s presence in the video game console market before being officially discontinued in 2017.
Following closely, the Xbox 360 claims the second position with 5,059 listings. Launched worldwide in 2005, the Xbox 360 gained immense popularity due to its focus on multiplayer gaming and the ability to digitally download games and media through the Xbox Live Marketplace. Exclusive franchises like Halo and Gears of War further contributed to its success.
Ranking third, the original PlayStation boasts 4,854 available units for resale on eBay. First introduced in Japan in 1994, the PlayStation revolutionized gaming by utilizing compact discs instead of cartridges, which were commonly used by other gaming systems at the time. The console birthed numerous iconic franchises, including Metal Gear, Tekken, and Tomb Raider.
In fourth place, the Nintendo DS Lite has 4,694 units listed for sale worldwide. This handheld console with dual screens was designed as a slimmer and lighter version of its predecessor, the Nintendo DS. Since its release in 2006, it garnered overwhelming demand and sold over 93 million units before being discontinued in 2014.
With 4,381 units available for sale worldwide, the PlayStation 2 secures the fifth position.
Released in 2000, it holds the distinction of being the best-selling video game console of all time, having sold over 155 million units. Remarkably, its production continued until 2013, spanning an impressive lifespan of 13 years.
The remaining consoles in the top ten include the PlayStation 4 (6th), Nintendo 64 (7th), Nintendo Switch (8th), PlayStation 3 (9th), and Xbox 360 S (10th).
Among the consoles with the fewest listings worldwide, the RCA Studio II stands out with only five listings. Released in 1977, it represents one of the earliest video game consoles and appears to be one of the rarest as well. Other consoles with minimal resale activity include the Fairchild Channel F and Atari Jaguar CD, each with just six listings.
