Art Call Opens

Perth, March 18: A new painting exhibition in Penang is calling for submissions from artists across Malaysia, with organisers aiming to showcase the breadth and diversity of contemporary Malaysian art.
Titled “Equatorial Art, Nanyang Breeze: An Elite Malaysian Painting Exchange Exhibition 2026,” the exhibition will be held in June 2026 at the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery’s Level 7 Special Exhibition Hall. It is initiated by the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery and co-organised by the Penang State Museum Board and the Global Chinese Arts & Culture Society.
The nationwide open call will bring together artists from different states, ethnic communities and cultural backgrounds, with about 60 to 80 paintings expected to be featured. Organisers said the exhibition is intended to strengthen artistic exchange, promote Malaysian contemporary art internationally and position Penang as a regional cultural hub.
Professor Lin Xiang Xiong, founder of the Gallery said, “While art may not directly change the world, it has the power to transform the way people understand one another. Through visual language and aesthetic experience, art transcends the boundaries of language, culture, and background, fostering deeper resonance and meaningful communication. To me, ‘Art for Peace’ is not merely a slogan, but a sustained cultural practice. “Equatorial Art, Nanyang Breeze” is not only a painting exchange exhibition, but a tangible expression of this cultural vision, one that invites artists, the public, and cultural institutions to participate in shaping an open, evolving, and future-oriented artistic ecosystem.”
Submissions close on April 7, 2026, with jury selection set for April 21 and the shortlist to be announced on April 24. Selected artists will then be invited to send their physical works to the gallery in May.

Yo-Chi’s Water Stand

Yo-Chi Co-owner and Brand Director Oliver Allis says the frozen yogurt chain is willing to forgo millions in bottled water sales after introducing free refill taps across its stores to reduce single-use plastic waste, timed with World Water Day on March 22.
Yo-Chi Co-owner and Brand Director Oliver Allis says the frozen yogurt chain is willing to forgo millions in bottled water sales after introducing free refill taps across its stores to reduce single-use plastic waste, timed with World Water Day on March 22.

Perth, March 23: Frozen yogurt chain Yo-Chi says it is forgoing up to $10 million a year in bottled water sales after removing bottled water from all stores and replacing it with free still and sparkling refill taps.
Timed with World Water Day on March 22, the retailer said the move was designed to reduce single-use plastic waste and make refilling easier for customers. Yo-Chi, which now has 69 stores, estimates the policy helps avoid around 5.7 million plastic bottles, or more than 100 tonnes of plastic, each year.
“We genuinely want our water bill to get bigger,” says Yo-Chi Co-owner and Brand Director Oliver Allis.
“Every time someone refills their bottle instead of buying a plastic one, that’s a win. Bottled water is one of the most profitable products a hospitality business can sell. It can cost less than 50 cents wholesale and sell for two to five dollars.”
“But every one of those bottles is used for a few minutes and then can sit in the environment for hundreds of years. It’s ridiculous given how decent our water is in Australia, and how many people have reusable bottles nowadays!”
Yo-Chi said the figures were calculated with MODA Water by scaling average daily litres poured at a sample of stores and converting that into the equivalent number of 500ml bottles at a $2 retail price.
“If more businesses made refilling easy, we could dramatically reduce the number of plastic bottles being produced every year,” Allis said.
To mark the campaign, Yo-Chi said anyone who refills a bottle with free filtered water on Friday, March 27, will also receive a buy-one-get-one-free Yo-Chi.

Shire Easter Events

Community markets featuring food, entertainment and family activities return for the Easter season.

Perth, March 26: Two community events will bring food, shopping and family-friendly entertainment to the Sutherland Shire over the Easter period, with Cambridge Markets hosting activations in Cronulla and Engadine.
The Cronulla Easter Market will now go ahead on Sunday, March 29, from 10am to 4pm at Don Lucas Reserve, after Saturday’s market was cancelled due to forecast extreme wind conditions, including sustained winds of up to 50km/h and gusts reaching 67km/h.
Organisers said the decision to cancel Saturday’s event was made with the safety of stallholders, staff and visitors as the top priority.

The Sunday market is expected to feature about 150 stalls, gourmet food, artisan products and children’s activities including an Easter egg hunt, face painting and visits from the Easter Bunny.
A make-up market has also been scheduled for Sunday, April 12, during the school holidays, giving visitors another chance to attend the Cronulla Easter Market.
Meanwhile, Eat Drink Nights Engadine will take place on Thursday, April 2, and Friday, April 3, from 5pm to 9pm at Engadine Town Square.
The evening event will include international street food, desserts, live music and Easter-themed entertainment.
Organisers said the events are designed to support local businesses while offering families and visitors a festive community atmosphere across two weekends in the lead-up to Easter.

Yo-Chi BOGO Deal

The company has not confirmed if the promotion will be repeated
