Homebound Australians Tell Their Stories Through Exhibition

Homebound and bedridden Australians tell their stories through arts exhibition.

Adelaide, Feb 16: More than 600 thousand Australians prevented from leaving home by their disability can now access an innovative wellbeing initiative to reveal their personal journey and challenges navigating the healthcare system.
The exhibition has combined science with technology to develop twenty-three photographs, posters and videos with the expert guidance of health consumers like Penelope McMillan and researchers from the multidisciplinary team that Dr Maria Alejandra Pinero de Plaza, Caring Futures Institute at Flinders University, has integrated to shine a light on their traumatic personal experiences and advocate for improved access to public health services.
‘Approximately 50 percent of these Australians are aged 5-64 years, and the other half are 65 years or older, so a wide socio-demographic spectrum,’  Dr Pinero de Plaza, a researcher at Flinders University that has led the development of an online arts and storytelling exhibition with a network of Frail, Homebound and Bedridden People (FHBP) and clinicians said.
The FHBP are using innovative wellbeing initiatives to tell their personal stories of struggle, aiming to build support networks and primary care access. Many of these Australians live with health issues – including frailty, disabilities, mental health, permanent injuries, and autoimmune, chronic, and rare conditions.
They are left feeling trapped and alone without appropriate access to disability, telehealth and financial support.

AirBnB: Penang Going The Wrong Way

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 16: Airbnb has reiterated that the Penang government’s proposed guidelines for short-term rental accommodation (STRA) would have an adverse impact on the livelihoods of many everyday Malaysians, if enacted and enforced this year.
The accommodation platform has urged for new guidelines in its detailed feedback and policy recommendations to the Penang executive committee.
Airbnb’s calls for fair and practical guidelines are critical as short term rental accommodation continues to gain momentum in Malaysia.
A survey conducted by YouGov revealed that 43 percent of homeowners in Malaysia have considered hosting on Airbnb to take advantage of the travel rebound.
Notably, latest Airbnb data reveals that the platform has one million Superhosts around the world, with a 4.8 or higher average overall rating based on Airbnb guest reviews in the past year.
In Malaysia, over 13 per cent of all hosts are Superhosts.
Following the return of interstate travel, Penang is a top-of-mind destination among Malaysians with Georgetown ranking among the top searched domestic destinations on Airbnb in 2022.
By restricting tourism in Penang, the proposed guidelines may hamper Penang’s domestic and international tourism recovery and jobs growth in the long term.
